London Heathrow International Airport
London Heathrow International Airport can easily be described as one of the great hubs of international air travel, and with good reason. The airport has been handling more international travellers annually than any other airport in the world since 2004. With over 67 million passengers passing through their gates in 2008. Updates finished in 2008 include the addition of Terminal 5, which increases the airport’s capacity to comfortably accommodate 90 million travellers annually.
The airport boasts an impressive line-up of restaurants, boutiques and shops for guests to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for designer clothes and perfumes, delicious gourmet cuisine or some great duty-free shopping; you’ll have plenty of unique and interesting places to choose from.
If you just need a break and are looking for a quiet place to relax there are plenty of great airport lounges, as well as cafes and pubs where you can sit back and check out the bustle of activity on the tarmac. A growing trend among the busiest airports, there are even private accommodations on site where weary commuters can retreat for a few hours to sleep.
For convenience you may want to check out the official BAA airport website before you travel (www.heathrowairport.com). The site is full of information and very easy to navigate. Use it to check your flight information and plan your trip so that you can maximize your guest experience. Once you’ve done that you can also locate shops and restaurants nearest your gate, reserve a lounge and print terminal maps for your convenience.
September 2009 saw the publication of Alain de Botton’s unique insight into the workings of Heathrow Airport – A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary.
