Humberside Airport

Humberside Airport is found in the Borough of North Lincolnshire, about 19km to the west of Grimsby and about 24km from both Scunthorpe and Kingston upon Hull. It is situated along the A18.

Although the Humberside Airport is on the smaller side in terms of neighbouring international airports, it is owned by the largest airport company, Manchester Airports Group. The airport was almost closed in 2008, but MAG decided to try out other management angles and keep Humberside open for at least three to five years.

Humberside is the 33rd in the list of most used airports in the UK due to an 8.7% drop in flights handled over the last year. In 2008 427,648 passengers travelled through Humberside which has a lot to do with its limited range of scheduled flights. It caters in particular to those who live in Lincolnshire, East Yorkshire, and the East Midlands.

The airport also holds a CAA Public Use Aerodrome License which allows both flying instruction and commercial use. Due to this fact, Humberside does have a large group of people who choose to utilise its general aviation services with five different flying organizations and clubs that run out of it. This is partially because Humberside is able to offer low landing and handling fees compared to other airports nearby.

The airport first opened its aviation doors in 1941 when it was used as a Royal Air Force Base called the RAF Kirmington. After WWI ended in 1945 the area was left abandoned until 1974 when it was reopened as Kirmington airport which the local area was then known as. In 1992 the airport underwent reconstruction to expand the runway to accommodate larger aircrafts.

Currently, Eastern Airlines, Flybe, Thomas Cook Airlines, Eurocypria Airlines, Thomson Airlines, and KLM Cityhopper all fly through the Humberside Airport offering transportation to Jersey, Amsterdam, Palma de Mallorca, Aberdeen, Larnaca, and Heraklion.
Humberside’s main competitors include Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, East Midlands Airport, and Leeds Bradford Airport.
