Winter Blues?  – Try the Canary Islands

The Winter Blues are not a new music style… it is an unfortunate disease common to many Northern Europeans and those living in the Northern parts of North America. Essentially, a lack of sunlight during the winter affects your overall mood making life unpleasant for sufferers. Women tend to be affected much more frequently than men, and it is mainly a condition that affects younger people, usually starting in the person’s twenties and thirties.

What are its effects?

The Winter Blues is a form of depression that takes place around the same time each year with the change of seasons. It affects individuals exposed to few sunlight hours, such as northern European citizens. People who suffer from Winter Blues experience increased appetite, weight gain and hypersomnia.

If you suffer two or more of these symptoms each year in the fall and into the winter, you may suffer from winter blues:

• Increased feelings of lethargy; feeling tired all the time. For some scientists it’s a human trait similar to animals’ winter hibernation.

• Difficulty in getting up in the mornings as the days gets shorter.

• Difficulty in concentrating and thinking creatively, compared to the summer months.

• Increased craving for carbohydrate-rich foods like chocolate and fizzy drinks.

Although the Winter Blues are not as severe as long-term depression, they can change the way a person thinks, reacts, and deals with everyday challenges.
