Hidden airline charges guide available

With Ryanair recently increasing the cost of checking in 15kg of luggage to £15 per flight and introducing a new luggage allowance of 20kg at a hefty £25,. With this is mind, APH has put together a comprehensive table highlighting these ‘hidden’ charges, available in the Know Before You Go section of the website at www.aph.com/hiddencharges.

The table compares six of the most popular budget airlines including Ryanair, easyJet, Flybe, bmibaby, Jet2.com and Thomson Airways highlighting checked-in baggage fees, credit card handling fees, admin fees and extra charges for carrying infant equipment.

All the airlines, apart from Thomson Airways, charge an administration fee however travellers should be extra careful with checking-in luggage as booking a second bag of 15kg with Ryanair during the ‘peak travel’ period of July and August can cost a whopping £160 for a return flight – that’s £260 for two bags*. However by booking online the cost is reduced to £140. Flybe.com, on the other hand, only charges £9.99 for the first bag when booked online and £18 when booked at the airport.

All the airlines offer free wheelchair service and assistance but families with young children should pay attention to extra charges concerning infant equipment such as pushchairs, travel seats and cots. Some of them allow travellers to carry one item, such as a pushchair, free of charge but easyJet for example will charge £15 per item. As well as booking online, savvy travellers can make savings in other ways, for example by paying with a debit card will avoid credit card handling fees of up to £5 and purchasing meals at the airport after security will normally prove to be more cost effective.

British Airways Club World and First Class Flight Sale

British Airways has reduced its Club World business class and selected first class fares in its luxury flight and holiday sale, ending 6 July 2010.

Willie Walsh, British Airways’ CEO, said: “Customers can take advantage of these great discounts with confidence. We recognise that some may be concerned about the possibility of future disruption but it is our intention to keep flying 100% of our longhaul operation throughout the coming months. We will keep the flag flying.”

During the luxury flight and holiday sale, Club World fares have been reduced on long haul flights to places like Sharm el Sheikh and Montego Bay. Club Europe price reductions include short haul flights from London City to new routes Palma and Ibiza or Gatwick to Rome and Thessaloniki, and customers can save on first class flights to Barbados from Gatwick or Heathrow, as well as flights to Mauritius and Tokyo also included in the sale.

In addition to the savings customers can already make through ba.com’s dynamic packaging option, which allows them to combine flights and hotels or flights and car hire, those looking for luxury holiday packages this summer can head to the 5* Carlisle Bay, Antigua where an unspoilt coast beckons sun worshipers and offers romantic strolls at sunset. Return business class flights and accommodation with breakfast are included. Alternatively a weekend in style is on offer at the 5* Le Parker Meridien, one of a number of luxury hotels in New York, including return business class flights and accommodation only.

Virgin Atlantic celebrating 10 years of flights to Las Vegas

Virgin Atlantic’s 10th anniversary of flights between London & Las Vegas has been marked by Virgin Group Chairman Sir Richard Branson, and the world’s most famous burlesque performer Dita Von Teese, at an airside photocall as they walk the wing of the plane on arrival.

Since June 2000 Virgin Atlantic has flown 2 million passengers to the destination, with its twice-weekly service increasing to a daily flight in may 2006 due to the route’s popularity. Today, the airline is also announcing the launch of twice-weekly flights from Manchester to Las Vegas in April 2011.

New BA route to Ibiza from London City Airport

British Airways has launched its new BA CityFlyer service to Ibiza, allowing passengers to fly direct from the Docklands to the Balearics.

In just two hours and 15 minutes, customers can fly from London City on a direct flight to Ibiza on the new Embraer 190 aircraft, to this popular city break destination. Flights depart and return on a Monday, Friday and Sunday, leaving early morning and returning early evening, which will benefit clubbers notoriously caught out by midnight departures. For July and August only, a Wednesday service has also been added.

Thomson Holidays introduce Ash Guarantee to protect holiday plans

The travel chaos left in the wake of the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull has left many travellers uncertain over summer holiday plans. But Thomson have intoduced a new “Ash Guarantee” for its customers booking package holiday or flight only deals.

The ‘Ash Guarantee’ promises:

British Airways to provide 41 weekly flights between Jersey and Gatwick this summer

British Airways is increasing the frequency on its popular Jersey-Gatwick service this summer increasing flights to Jersey to 41 a week. British Airways currently operates 35 flights a week between Jersey and Gatwick as part of its winter schedule.

The summer schedule starts on April 26 which will then see an extra morning service operating from Monday to Saturday in both directions. These additional flights to Jersey will leave Gatwick at 5.25am, arriving in Jersey at 6.25am and the return flight leaving Jersey at 7.15am, arriving in Gatwick at 8.15am. This adds to the well-timed flight selection for international and domestic flight connections already available to customers.

Jersey is known for its picturesque old-world charm mixed with buzzing nightlife, elegant seafood dining in its capital St Helier and tax free shopping, making it a great short or long break destination for those in the UK looking for something familiar but more exotic.

New ISO Standards for airport noise

A new ISO standard has been introduced for those living in the vicinity of airports. The new standard, called ISO 20906:2009, Acoustics – Unattended monitoring of aircraft sound in the vicinity of airports will help regulators, professionals and researchers in their effort to reduce noise in the vicinity of airports.

ISO 20906:2009 sets out the requirements for reliable measurement of aircraft sound, and describes a threshold system of sound event recognition in a complex sound environment with multiple aircraft and other sound sources.

British Airways increasing flights form London City Airport to Spain

British Airways is expanding its range of Spanish routes from London City Airport, with more flights to Barcelona and soon new services to Majorca and Ibiza in the Balearic Islands.

The airline is re-launching its year-round flights to Barcelona, with this previously summer-only service resuming at the end of March 2010 and continuing through the summer and winter. In addition, an extra Saturday morning service will be introduced in May, bringing the total number of flights to seven per week.

British Airways is also launching new services to Majorca and Ibiza in May and currently operates flights to Madrid, Spain’s capital.

British Airways’ new First brand, in which it has invested some £100 million took off February 10, 2010 on a Boeing 777 bound for Chicago. The new First brand draws on the airline’s rich heritage to create an exclusive experience based on classic design and understated luxury.

The airline’s Coat of Arms with the motto ‘To fly to serve’ is a core feature and the 1920s pioneering era of luxury flights is captured through motifs such as Cyril Kenneth Bird’s ‘Care in the Air’ character. The design of the new cabin is inspired by premium British automotive brands. At the heart of its quink blue and cream design is a redesigned suite featuring an enhanced bed – wider with a new ‘intelligent’ mattress and the finest 400-thread Egyptian cotton bed linen.

Each individual suite has its own personal wardrobe, a leather-bound writing desk that converts into a dining table, a new 15″ in-flight entertainment screen and a buddy seat to enable customers to dine together. The lighting and electronic blinds can be modified to reflect mood and time of day.

Customers have precision control over their seat position thanks to an innovative seat control unit that replaces the switches, allowing them to activate the bed position and pneumatic panels to support the head and lumbar positions.

A new premium service style has been developed for cabin crew to ensure world-class service for customers who can eat, sleep and work whenever they want to.

Air Berlin wins Business Travel Award for Best Short-Haul Airline

Lower-cost airline, Air Berlin, has been awarded Best Short-Haul Airline at the inaugural Business Travel Awards. Air Berlin, Germany’s second largest airline and Europe’s third-biggest low-cost carrier, triumphed over rivals British Airways and bmi to win the award, which honours excellence in the corporate travel industry and recognises their commitment to the business travel sector.

“This is a great way to start 2010,“ says Titus Johnson, Air Berlin country manager of UK and Ireland. “Air Berlin has carved out an enviable reputation amongst corporate clients. With pressure on travel budgets we are the ideal partner, offering an unbeatable combination of lower fares while maintaining the on-board frills.”

Air Berlin is Germany’s second largest airline, operating extensive semi-low-cost services to holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands and North Africa, as well as to major cities in Europe from 21 German airports. Its main base is Berlin-Tegel International Airport. The airline carried 28.6 million passengers in 2008.

The awards were created this year in a merger of the prestigious Buying Business Travel Diamond Awards, and the Business Travel World Awards. They are voted for by business travel buyers, suppliers and arrangers. This years awards ceremony took place at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel on January 17. Air Berlin also won Best Short-Haul Airline in 2007 at the events predecessor, the Business Travel World Awards.
